Monday February 25

Hi everyone!  We had a busy day today...here is what the students want to tell you...

" I liked the 3-2-1 Action art with Kari today." Aoife and many others...
"I liked writing my own story problem." Sami
"I liked seeing other people's stuffed animals!" Evan ( I agree...it's fun to see what other people like!)
"I really enjoyed finishing up our nutrition unit by designing my own portfolio." Grace, Calvin, Teddy, Ava, and others...
"I forgot my coat at recess, and when it started to hail, Riley shared her coat with me." Savannah

Just so you know..everyone thought the quick hail shower at the end of lunch recess was pretty cool!

"I enjoyed reading with Riley during quiet reading." Peter
"I forgot my stuffed animal to draw during art, but it was ok because Lainey shared hers with me." Kora

It was a busy day of learning!  See you tomorrow!

February 22

We had a very busy day!  We started with a 100's day scavenger hunt.  We looked for numbered Hershey Kisses scattered around the room, then placed them onto the correct spot on a 100's board.  After our literacy time, we tried to write 100 words each...and we did!  Then we learned more about the structures of teeth, how cavities form, and how to prevent them.  We even looked at some of my rotten wisdom teeth (pulled of course).  Hopefully this object lesson will help everyone understand the importance of brushing every day!

We had inside lunch recess due to rain.  Then we heard a nice story about 100's day and figured out how many Hershey kisses we could have with 24 kids and 100 pieces of candy...the answer was 4 each.  After that, we made creations with 100 objects from various math materials.  When that was cleaned up, we joined the other second graders in the cafeteria for our November, December, January, and February birthdays celebration.  We had a little snack, sang 'Happy Birthday' and enjoyed the company of friends.  We finished the day with library and choice time...whew!

Remember, bring a small stuffed animal on Monday for art.

Have a wonderful weekend!

February 21- Some items to make note of...

News & Dates:

Please bring a small stuffed animal on Monday February 25 for art.
Friday, March 1st is Read Across America day in honor of Dr. Suess' birthday on March 2.  We will be having a time in the afternoon reading and completing activities on March 1.  I thought it might be fun if:
1. We all wore "crazy" hats like the Cat in the Hat
2. If students could bring in a few of their own Dr. Suess books to share that day so we have many titles to choose from.  You could bring as many or as few as you wish (said the fish on the dish).
I have quite a few, but more would be more fun!  If you do bring books, make sure they have your family name in them.

Wearing hats and bringing books from home are completely optional...I am just suggesting them to add to the fun!

Please bring homework and library books tomorrow....

News from the students:

"Evan complemented my drawing." Seth
"I really liked creating story problems." Sami
"Catalina read with me during quiet reading." Savannah
"When I fell on the playground, Madeline and Savannah helped me." Riley
"I liked making the spinner that told us the different teeth and what they are used for." Aoife & Kora
(incisors, canines, premolars, molars)
"We all enjoyed watching 'Open wide, Tooth School Inside'. It was a fun way to learn facts about our teeth."

February 20

We had a short, but busy, day!

"When I asked Riley to share a book during quiet reading time, she said yes."  Aoife
"Colin gave me the new shark book to read and Cole lent me his copy of Geronimo Stilton to read- then he lent Colin one too!" Evan
"I liked it when Catalina was willing to trade one the new books so we both were able to read what we wanted." Grace
"Della gave me a really nice compliment about the quilt I made." Cole
"Aoife let me be her partner during math." Savannah

Have a great day! See you tomorrow!

February 19

Happy Birthday Della!

Just in case you have not heard the news...an anonymous donor gave enough to complete our grant through Donor's Choose...so we will be receiving 4 iPads!  Yeah!!!  I don not know when they will arrive (takes a bit for paperwork to clear and orders to be made). However, I am very proud of all of the parents, family friends and student piggy banks that made this possible...you are amazing!

Here is sampling of what happened at school today:

"It was nice when Grace said I could join her creating with Widgets during choice time." Colin
"We was nice to share a book with Madeline during quiet reading time." Savannah
"I enjoyed making a paper box during choosing time." Peter
"We really liked playing with each other at recess!" Aoife & Hannah
"Evan and Cole gave me a good idea of what to draw during choice time." Sami
"Cole and I had a discussion about a math idea, and when I was right, Cole was really nice and mature about it." Bailey
"I enjoyed learning about what kids in other countries do when their baby teeth fall out." Grace & others... (we read the book Throw Your Tooth on the Roof)

It was a busy day...remember, 2 hour late opening tomorrow!  We will get started right away with literacy centers when the students arrive.  Enjoy this sunny afternoon!  :)
