Earth Day Field Trip (lots of pictures)!

The students in room 13 spent their Earth Day exploring Kelley Point Park and Smith Bybee Wetland!  Our morning started off with a nature walk led by our wonderful parent volunteers.  Students found a giant tree to climb in and an anchor that was right at the end of the park.  We ate our lunches by the edge of the Willamette and Columbia Rivers, up in a meadow.  There were plenty of walking sticks to go around and everyone explored the beaches at the park.

After our time at Kelley Point we drove over to the Wetlands.  This time we had our own guides to show us all around the wetlands.  Students got to explore with microscopes and other tools to find wildlife in the wetlands.  Groups of students got to see turtles, frogs, eagles and salamanders just to name a few!  It was a great way to spend Earth Day for the students in room 13!

Weather Books & Projects

Today we are creating our very own weather books.  The books are made up of all of the projects we have created during the weather unit.  Students got the chance to display all of their work in a creative way with the use of crafts in the room.  Each student was able to choose the color of their book and decorate it however they wished.  Some students used lots of colors and stickers, while others chose to create their own cut outs and decorate with crayons and marker.  Everyone has the same projects in their books, however each student laid out their book differently.  Parents will have a chance to see the weather books tomorrow!

Students have also been busy today with their weather projects.  Everyone got to pick their own weather topic and use the resources in the room to create a project of their choice.  The creativity was amazing, students made board games, posters, diagrams and books to share tomorrow.  While the room may have looked a bit messy, it was all in the name of creativity for the students!  Tomorrow will be an exciting day in room 13 as students show off all of their hard work during our weather unit.

Friday April 10 - Electricity

Hi everyone!
This week was all about storms - wild weather!  The students discovered concepts related to how storms form, including how lightening and thunder are formed.  As a practical demonstration, we observed a plasma ball.  The students watched a light bulb turn on with no lamp.  They also discover what objects and materials are conductors of electricity.  Have a nice weekend with your family!
Here are some pictures of our experiments with electricity:

See you on Monday!

Friday April 3

Hi everyone!

The time has flown by and now it is April...looking at the calendar, I am amazed at how quickly the time goes by when we are learning together.

This week we engaged in more learning about clouds and various forms of precipitation.  We discovered more about rain, hail, snow, and even how rainbows form.

Early in the week, we read the Cloudmakers, a story about the ancient Chinese art of paper making.  Today we had a visit from Teacher Joan, who showed us many ideas about trees - remember how we eat sap and bark from trees?  After we heard some stories and viewed some artifacts, we made paper!
This paper is drying and we will take it home next week.

I wish you all a lovely weekend!  Here are some pictures of our special guest for you to enjoy!
