Learning more about food!

Last week we continued our study of food as nutritionists.  We learned more about the meat and bean group and how the protein in this group can help our muscles grow.  We also made a very common, protein filled food: Peanut butter - the students gave it two thumbs up!

Later we learned more about the fruit group - full of vitamin C to help us heal from cuts and bruises and fight colds and other illnesses.  We made a pot full of vitamin C - also known as applesauce!!  Once again, a definite favorite with the kids!

Check back for more nutrition learning this week!

A "Frantastic" Time!

Hi everyone - the title of this post is not a typo - we had a "Frantastic" Time yesterday at the Franz Bread Bakery.  We had a great tour of the factory which included seeing a bun highway, a dough monster, and many other fascinating factory finds!  We could not take pictures in the factory, but here are few of things we did while we waited for our tour:

 Sampling delicious Franz donuts!

 grinding wheat from seeds...
watching a movie about the history of the bakery...
 more grinding!

excited kids giving the Franz wave!

Thanks to all of the parents who made this trip possible!  See you soon!

Happy New Year!

Hi everyone!

Wow, what a crazy weekend with icy weather and cancelled school!  We are working hard to get back into the swing of things here in second grade.

Last week we began a study as nutritionists looking closely at food and how it helps our bodies.  We began with the dairy group and today we made butter from heavy cream!

First we were shaking....then we were eating - the verdict - YUM YUM

We are also beginning a mathematical unit about geometry.  In second grade we are focusing on the characteristics of shapes, such as being able to day that a six sided figure is a hexagon.  We are also working on different units (such as triangles) to determine area and how halves and quarters combine to made shapes.  We will be focusing on geometry for about 4 weeks. Today we determined how many sides, edges and corners different 3-D shapes had...sometimes its a little tricky finding a strategy for figuring that out!

Keep in touch!
