February 25th 2015

The morning started off with the students getting new seats in the room.  After recess we talked more about teeth and how we can take care of our teeth.  We learned that the outside of an egg is a lot like the outside of our teeth and used this idea to do an overnight experiment.  An egg was placed in a cup of water, a cup of soda and a cup of milk to see what will happen if left over night.  Students wrote a hypothesis about what they think will happen to each of the eggs.  After we wrote our hypothesis, students got to look at Mrs. Robb's and Mrs. Robb's husbands teeth that had been taken out by a dentist.  The class got to see what the roots of a tooth look like and a cavity.  After passing the teeth around we watched a movie about how to fight cavities and brush our teeth properly.  The students of room 13 are ready to take care of their teeth, knowing how long to brush for and how to floss properly!

Today we had a special guest come in and talk to use about dental health.  Dr. Gold, Emily's dad, spent the afternoon showing the students what healthy teeth look like and how we can better take care of our teeth.  We learned that we should be brushing for two minutes and foods like carrots and apples will help keep our teeth strong and clean.  At the end of the presentation students were given tooth brushes, tooth paste and dental floss to use at home!

Today was a great day in room 13! We celebrated Chinese New Year with a special visit from our friends at Panda Express.  The group of five speakers started by teaching us about Chinese New Year and how to count to ten in Chinese.  Students then were taught how to eat with chopsticks and given orange chicken to try out their new skills.  The class loved their snack and got to enjoy a fortune cookie after.  Our guests even brought special red envelopes for the students with a treat for Panda Express inside.
At the end of the day students went outside to watch a live Lion Dance performed by a group of dancers.  The class got to sit in the front row and even had the dragon puppet come close enough to touch!  Calvin got to join the group up front and played an instrument for the dance.  Each student got a chance to see the dragon up close and even pet it.  It was a great way to end the day for the students of room 13!

February 12th 2015

Today was a fun day in room 13 during quiet reading.  The boys and girls had the option of listening to Ayana's sister come down and read to them.  After quiet reading and math the students headed to music where they got another 5 out of 5 for being well behaved students.  Thomas was excited to share that he was able to sing alone twice in front of his friends.  When the students returned to the classroom at the end of the day they had the opportunity to practice their letter writing with a practice thank you note.  Some students chose to write a thank you note to a family member while others chose a friend or even Santa.  We ended our day with a Valentine's Day book in preparation for our Valentine's Day celebration tomorrow!

Tuesday February 10

This week we are wrapping up our study of food and nutrition.  The students created posters to "teach" the school about food and eating and how that relates to healthy bodies.  Here are some of their creations:

We will continue to learn more about how to be healthy through dental health!  See you tomorrow!

Monday February 2

Happy Groundhog's Day!

We began our learning today with an art project which involved heart, design, warm colors and cool colors.  Here is a sample of our work...

We read a book about being left out because you are little called Jamacia Tag-Along and shared a new poem about food and nutrition.
Later during math we thought about a square as a unit that equals 1.  If so, then 2 triangles create the unit.  We completed some "quilt square math" to help us learn more about this concept.  We also continued to write and refine the "How To " books we have been creating...

See you tomorrow!
