Friday June 14 - A few pictures and goodbye!

Here we are...the last day of second grade.  This is the 152nd time I have posted on this blog which has been viewed more than 5,000 times by you and other folks from around the world.  This has been an amazing year full of learning.

I asked the students to write what they learned during second grade OR what they liked best about second grade.  Here is some of what they wrote:

"I liked all of the science projects we did..." William
"I liked the iPads..." Zac
"I liked second grade because of my friends...and I liked our room." Evan
"One of my favorite things was the habitat biome we were studying..."Cole
"I liked writing reports..." Bailey
" I liked writing alot because I like doing writing assignments.."Grace
"I like the teacher and the friends most of all..." Aoife
"I liked second grade because I liked the art projects..." Savannah
"I liked learning about habitats, ants, and fairy tales..."  Katie
"I learned in second grade that only if you try will it count."  Madeline
"I love the art..."  Seth
" I like the iPad because we can look up facts..." Peter
"I loved learning about gray wolves..." Kora
"Always do your best in everything..." Riley
"I liked the library because I love reading...best of all, I liked my teacher Mrs. Robb." Della
"I liked math, reading, and writing because I learned alot and I like that!" Catalina
"I liked recess and choice time...and Mrs. Robb because she's nice." Hayden
" I liked every single little part of school because of Mrs. Robb." Hannah
"I liked visiting Franz bakery." Teddy
"I liked learning fractions because they prepare me for the future." Lainey
"A habitat is a whole world of animals." Calvin
"I really liked writing animal reports." Sami
"I learned that ants can carry things bigger than them." Colin
"For the best year, I have the best teacher...all teachers make the fun stuff happen!" Ava
Wow.

I want to say a huge thank you for the beautiful cards and generous gifts.  You have been an amazing parent group to work with!  Here is a picture of the handmade card from Heidi:
Amazing!
We had a great last day.  The kids helped me clean and count the books in the room: 1,568 books to be exact!  I'm sure nobody read them all, but a few might have come close!
We enjoyed a movie this afternoon, ate yummy popcorn courtesy of Della's mom Nicole, our room parent EXTRAORDINAIRE!  Then we had a surprise ice cream sunday party courtesy of left overs from Teacher Julie's room, then delicious cookies and good-bye wishes from Ava's mom and dad.
Here are some pictures of us with our art portfolios:

We watched "Meet the Robinsons" a fabulous Disney movie about making mistakes, not giving up, and always looking ahead to the future.  One of my favorite quotes is shown at the end of the movie:

“ Around here, we keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we're curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.” Walt Disney

This is how life is...we keep moving forward.  Every moment is precious.

So, children:

listen to your parents and teachers,

find a way to help someone everyday,

read something everyday,

and keep moving forward on to the next adventure!

Wave at me next year...

Congratulations Third Graders!

Wednesday June 12

Today our morning was spent writing, creating amazing artistic projects, and completing a little math.
In the afternoon, we enjoyed our creative play: but it was LOUD...my ears are still ringing.
Tomorrow we will clean out our desks and lockers, so please bring an empty back pack and possibly an extra bag.
Here are some pictures from today:

  See you tomorrow!

Tuesday June 11

This morning we had a great time with a creative weaving art project.  Here are some pictures!

If you have been wondering where all of this art is going, we are creating a bound book of all the art created by each student this year...look for it on Friday!

The technology time was a success!  Quietest afternoon of the year...

For tomorrow, bring a building/creative toy such as LEGOs, science kits, Zoobs, Lincoln Logs, art sets, puzzles (not too big), robot kits, 3D puzzles, etc...the choices are limitless!

See you tomorrow!

Monday June 10

We had a great day.  We started with "OpArt" this morning, solved some number riddles for math, then ended our day with "Board Game Bonanza"!  Everyone seemed to be themselves, learning new games and playing old ones.  Thanks to Aoife and Hannah who taught me how to play "Apples to Apples"!
Tomorrow is "Technology Tuesday."  Please, only send what you are comfortable with.  The students did a great job today of keeping their games put away until needed, so I am sure they will do the same with the technology.

Have a great day...4 more to go second graders!

June 6

Happy Birthday Kora!

This message is from the office:

Could you ask them to pass on to the families in their classes that parents and kids will have a farewell party for Chris Emery on Thurs June 13th from 3-4pm in the school library and that light snacks will be served. I know many families don't have kids currently with Chris but have had her in the past and truly appreciate her efforts and would like to give her a hug and a thank you before she leaves.

We continue to work on our rainforest projects...I will take pictures tomorrow for you to see.  These projects have been amazing and I am very proud of what your children have accomplished.

Last day for library tomorrow...don't forget your homework.

Tuesday June 4

Hi Everyone!
As I am sure you all realize, we have been very busy learning this year.  You children have worked very hard and we have not had very many parties or celebrations in order to make time for our important work.
Here is just small sample of our work this year (we figured this out together):

We have spent:
Over 11,000 minutes studying math
Over 14,000 minutes reading
Over 4,500 minutes dedicated to writing
We have also spent 45-60 minutes a day reading, writing, and talking about science.
WOW!!

In honor of all of this hard work, I proposed to the students some celebrations based upon parties that other second grade classes had this year.

During the last week of school, we will spend the mornings completing art, reading, writing, and math projects.  However, during the afternoon, we thought it would be fun to do the following:

June 10, Monday afternoon:  bring your favorite board or card game from home to play and share with others.  Sorry, Battleship, Yahtzee, and Uno are just some examples!

June 11, Tuesday afternoon:   bring your favorite "tech" gadget: ipod, DS, Game Boy, iPad, Kindle (for example) or any other handheld game/tech toy -it cannot be plugged in.  Please only send what you feel comfortable sending.  There are iPads and a computer here for children as well.  :)

June 12, Wednesday afternoon:  bring your favorite creative toy.  This should be something that involves building a creation. For example: LEGO set, Zoobs,  puzzles, Lincoln Logs, Marble Roll, paper dolls, etc...

All items will remain zipped in backpacks or closed in bags in lockers or secured in the classroom until the afternoon.  Participation is completely voluntary- there will be plenty of things to share and the classroom choice time and technology items will be available.

The students are very excited about this and I am very proud of all of the hard work they have done this year.

This week we are studying the rainforest for our last biome study.  I am looking forward to the creative projects.  See you tomorrow!
